fire branded salvaged oak wood
Artist Statement
Before it was felled by a winter storm, the Boundary Oak in Walnut Creek, California grew for 325 years in a world increasingly harmed by the actions of man. Proliferating atmospheric carbon has triggered a global climate change, the local impact of which is a West that burns out of control every summer. I chose three simple words - “Man,” “Fire” and “Death” - and using branding irons I burn each word into one of the three usable sides of my piece of the Boundary Oak. Man is the cause, fire is the method, and death is inevitable.
